The Royal Horse Guards landed at Zeebrugge in Belgium on 8th October by which time it was too late to lend assistance to the Belgian Army in Antwerp because the city had already been evacuated, so they headed south towards Ypres to become part of 7 Cavalry Brigade, 3rd Cavalry Division. They arrived there on 13th October and on 18th October they advanced towards Roulers on a reconnaissance mission. They did not get far before meeting up with enemy cyclists and other infantry and in the fight that followed Edmund Cole was killed. In the face of this force the Royal Horse Guards moved back the way they had come. |
